So far, we have resurfaced 50km of the city’s canal towpaths, upgraded 22km of routes through parks and green spaces, and built 8km of completely new off road route. We’ve also improved access to these routes and renewed lighting at key points on the canal network.

On the road, work is partially complete on the Lichfield Road and Nechells Parkway corridors and 11 routes have been introduced on quieter roads, to provide an alternative to cycling on a main road.

Three areas of the city now have 20mph speed limits on residential streets, which should improve road safety and cycling conditions.

We will now continue with the work to improve the last few kilometres of canal towpath and to build and improve more off road routes.

A fourth area of 20mph speed limits is expected to be implemented in 2017.

For the next phase of on road cycling infrastructure we will be focussing on high quality cycle routes from Selly Oak to the city centre, via the A38, and Perry Barr to the city centre, via the A34. The routes will be largely segregated and intended to allow a comfortable cycling experience on some of the city’s major roads.

The two routes will be linked by cycling infrastructure in the city centre.

We will also be investing in measures to improve cycling in local centres and Green Travel Districts.
